250 LEGO REVIEWS: 60116 AIR AMBULANCE

Time to review another of the 250 Lego sets I’ve accumulated over the last few years. This time it’s an entry from the wide-ranging and central ‘City’ series: 60116 Air Ambulance.

‘City’ has always been, for me, the Starter-for-10 of Lego themes. It’s the one I turn to when I fancy a bit of a quick build, a palate-cleanser while I’m desperately trying to persuade myself that I’ll buy that giant Space/Creator/Atlantis/Cool sub-theme set instead of paying off debts once I graft together the necessary 500 bucks somehow. As a consequence, I don’t really have any great expectations when I buy a ‘City’ set. It’s a diversion, a whimsy. With any luck it’ll have a couple of unusual pieces, or a nice colour scheme, but beyond that, you know, I mean, you know… you knoowww…. Yeah.

60116 Air Ambulance is an ordinary little ‘City’ set. It’s cute: a couple of minifigs, a motorbike, a little plane. The sort of thing that you pop in the far corner of your diorama to add a bit of visual interest for those who are letting their eyes wander, but not something you are going to pay a lot of attention to. The sort of thing you give an eight year old as a starter set. You can gauge its general importance by the fact I have no story, reminiscence, or even memory of how I got it, or what it means to me.

It’s just a set. But that’s not always a bad thing.

See? Cute.

For all of its general lack of outstanding features or impact, it’s an enjoyable little build: I managed to put it together while Luscious was getting ready to go out to lunch, and it was a lovely way to fill 30 minutes of spare time. It even has some play functionality in rear doors that are wide enough, and deep enough, to fit the included motorbike. With a set this size, playability adds immeasurably to the appeal, and this is very playable.

It’s a small addition, but an effective one.

In fact, the only negative I can give this set– given my low expectations– is the use of the giant cockpit piece. I’m averse to big, clunky, single-use pieces, as a rule: Lego’s greatest virtue is its flexibility, and a big, ugly piece like this simply ends up being thrown in my ‘useless piece’ box and forgotten.

File under ‘ugh’, for ‘Ugh!’

But it’s a small gripe. 60116 Air Ambulance is an ordinary set, with nothing to greatly recommend it but nothing to greatly warn against it, either. It does exactly what it says on the box, and fulfilled its role as a pleasant diversion.

You can do worse than that.

Nothing wrong with being average if that’s what you’re aiming for.
